Barbie Designer Christian Dior

Christian Dior defined Paris style and fashion beginning in the 1940's. His fashion house has been a staple in every season's fashions for over 60 years.

The pairing of this fashion giant with Mattel to create vintage fashion inspired Barbie dolls has been a treat for collectors and young girls alike. Together they have created collectible, limited edition Barbie dolls that embody the style and elegance of the Christian Dior fashion line.

The second of five children, Dior was the son of a wealthy fertilizer manufacturer in France. His family had hopes that he would become a diplomat, but Dior was highly artistic and had his heart set on the world of fashion.

Before becoming involved in the fashion industry, he had a gallery where he sold art from such artists as Pablo Picasso. In the 1930's he worked for fashion designer Robert Piguet and after his service in the army during World War II, Dior became one of the primary designers in the fashion house of Lucien Lelong.

In 1946, Dior founded his own fashion house and released his first line of women's clothing which he named Corolle. Dior's designs were more voluptuous than his predecessors and he was considered a master at creating silhouettes. He became a prolific designer, releasing a new line every 6 months.

Although Dior died in 1957 at the age of 52 as the result of a heart attack, the fashion house he established has continued to be a major influence in the world of high style to this day.

In the 1990's, little girls who had grown up with Barbie were becoming adults. They continued to enjoy the Barbie doll as collectors. The House of Dior was among the first designers to collaborate with Mattel in dressing the doll in its fabulous fashions.

The first Christian Dior designer Barbie was released in 1995. She was a limited edition doll wearing a jacket and matching skirt featuring black, gold, and red metallic brocade fabric. Barbie's platinum blonde hair is pulled into a chignon that highlights her gold leaf and rhinestone earrings.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Christian Dior, a vintage Dior fashion Barbie Doll was released. Also a limited edition, she wore a classic Dior inspired ensemble consisting of a full black skirt and stylish white jacket. She wears a wide brimmed hat, pearls and sleek black gloves to complete her 1940's Dior inspired look.

Amongst the many designers who worked with Mattel in the 1990's to create the Designer Series Barbie dolls, The House of Dior stood out with its elegant style and design.

The stylish influence of Dior's fashion sense is preserved for girls of all ages in these fabulous collector's dolls.
